Wingate University will hold its annual Shakespeare competition Feb. 28, with performances of Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet and King Lear. Each year, middle and high school students from schools in the area are invited to take part in the competition, with a $6 entry fee. In the preliminary round, students recite a sonnet and deliver a portion of one of the plays. The university estimates that more than 300 students take part in the contest each year. The first place winner in the high school division gets a free trip to New York City to compete in the National Shakespeare competition. Also the first through fifth place winners in the high school division get a scholarship to Wingate University. More information about the contest can be found at www.wingate.edu/academics/english.
