Seven kids from the Union County Department of Social Services Group Home got the thrill of a lifetime Tuesday, Dec. 20 when they were presented with a shopping spree, complete with Charlotte Bobcats players and cheerleaders.
“I contacted the Bobcats about possibly getting some tickets to a game as something special for the children,” Karen Tucker, processing assistant with Union County DSS, said. “They called back and asked if we would rather go on a shopping spree instead.”
The kids arrived at Time Warner Cable Arena Wednesday afternoon and had the opportunity to meet all the players and cheerleaders. The kids were later taken by bus to the Uptown Charlotte Target where they paired up with players and cheerleaders and had $125 to spend on whatever they wanted.
“The girls mainly bought clothes, jewelry and purses,” Tucker said. “The boys went straight for the electronics.”
Twenty-nine other kids from around Charlotte also participated in the shopping spree. The DSS Group Home kids were the only children participating from Union County.
“It was one of the top five days of my life just seeing that happen,” Tucker added. “It meant a lot to every one of the kids.”
