The Union County Public Schools now have a nonprofit foundation to raise funds and other support for the school district, and the foundation’s first executive director – Richard F. Baker Jr. – spoke briefly to the school board Tuesday night,
Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis introduced Baker as the former director of the Dale Earnhardt Foundation who has led a chamber of commerce and held executive positions with other nonprofits. The search committee got about 70 applications for the job, Davis noted.
Baker assured school board members Tuesday night that he knows the success of the foundation and its benefit to the school district depends on his success in raising funds. But he said the foundation, besides establishing public-private partnerships with local companies, is able to compete for grants “across the world” and tap resources that the school district couldn’t.
The members of the new foundation’s board reflect the diverse nature of the community. The officers are: Jeff Bass, chairman; Gary Sides, vice chairman; Sylvia Newsome, secretary; and Ron Hinson, treasurer.
The other board members are: Robert Heath, Tony Herrin, Mike Lutes, Patricia Martinez, Matt Nelson, Dr. Gwen Perkins, Starr Shaffer, Baxter Starnes and Dr. Jerry Thomas.
Board member Carolyn Lowder thanked Davis for bringing the foundation to reality. The foundation has been a longtime goal of hers, one that had left her frustrated when other attempts fell short.
