The Union County Community Shelter plans a community wide memorial service Nov. 17, in honor of homeless men and women who died in the area. The event, which includes a candlelight service on the Union County Courthouse steps, begins at 6pm.
“We began our Homeless Memorial three years ago,” Derrick Burnell, Director of Client Services, said. “It can be quite humbling to stand in the cold for a few minutes and empathize with the struggles people without homes deal with daily. We are all human beings and should be afforded the opportunity for grace and compassion.”
The service will consist of music, poetry, comments and candle lighting as Board Chair, Mary Ruth Smith, reads the names of the homeless from Union County that passed this year. As part of the memorial, Lee Park Baptist Church will sponsor a blanket drive and All About Storage – Monroe will sponsor a coat drive. Community members are invited to bring a new blanket or gently used coat that will be distributed throughout the winter at the Community Shelter.
