District Attorney to determine further charges
Three men are in jail today, facing charges in the Oct. 7 attempted robbery on Landsford Road in Monroe. Detectives from the Union County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged 24-year-old Joel Isaiah Brewer, 19-year-old Joshua Rashard Simpson and 35-year-old Dalton Emmanuel Mayhew with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Simpson and Brewer face charges of failure to report a death, while Simpson alone faces additional charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon.
At 1:30 a.m. Oct. 7, Monroe police got a call from 7004 Landsford Road, where a resident said that four men approached and tried to rob him as he arrived home. As he got out of the car, the victim said one of the men, armed with a handgun, fired at him as he ran through the back yard. He pulled out a gun of his own and returned fire, after which the suspect fled the scene.
Just before 6 a.m that morning, Monroe police responded to a call of a man found dead on Lakeview Drive and found he had died of a gunshot wound. Police linked that man, 24-year-old Robert Lewis Smith, to the earlier attempted robbery due to evidence left at the scene.
“We believe Robert Smith was shot by the robbery victim during the exchange of gunfire,” Sheriff’s Office Operations Captain Cody Luke said. “After all of the evidence has been examined by the state crime lab, the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if further charges are warranted (for the other suspects).”
The Sheriff’s Office had been part of a joint investigation, including Monroe police, Marshville police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 704-283-3789 or Crimestoppers at 704-283-5600.
