Donations help fund care packages overseas
Coming from an extended family of military officers, Amy Steward wanted to do something to help troops stationed overseas. Taking an idea from her job at Mary Kay Cosmetics, the mother of three created Sunscreen for Marines. For a donation, Steward. puts together packages of sunscreen, lip protectant and various lotions to help the soldiers deal with the desert conditions.
“I started it last week,” Steward said. “I had 50 donations in one day. My husband’s dad was in the Marines, (so) service men and women are important to me.”
Steward said she got the idea from a fellow Mary Kay consultant in Texas, who had worked with something similar.
“I can provide at cost, sunscreen, revitalization lotion and lip balm,” Steward said. “We can send that over to the service men and women.”
It takes a $20 donation to cover the cost of the materials, plus tax, to ship them. Steward had originally just planned to run the event for a week, but after seeing a good response, she decided to extend it out for a while longer.
“It’s just going so well, I think I’m gonna just keep it going,” Steward said.
A Facebook site for the project has been set up, labeled Sunscreen for Marines. Also, anyone wanting to contribute can email Steward at firstname.lastname@example.org.
