Criminal charges won’t be filed against the youth ministry volunteer who struck a Weddington teen with an ATV June 21 at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews.
Evan Wolfe, 15, of Weddington, died shortly after the 10:30 p.m. church parking lot accident.
Matthews Police said this week they presented the case to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, as required with every death investigation, and prosecutors decided not to press charges against driver Patrick Keaton, 43, of Mint Hill.
“The investigation into this tragic event is considered closed at this time,” Officer Stason Tyrrell said in a press release.
Wolfe was among hundreds of teens participating in the church’s third annual Seek the City outreach event. The teens and adult chaperones volunteered at agencies around the region during the day and returned to the church every night to pray and sleep.
A rising junior at Metrolina Christian Academy in Indian Trail, Wolfe had just returned from his long day of volunteering at about 10:30 p.m. when witnesses said he decided to lie in the church driveway and watch the storm that was rolling in. It was then he was hit by the ATV, Tyrrell said. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he soon died from his injuries. Metrolina Christian held a prayer vigil at the school last week in Wolfe’s honor, a spokeswoman said.
Hundreds gathered at the church to celebrate his life Saturday, June 25. He was buried in a private ceremony at Matthews Historic Cemetery.
According to his obituary, Wolfe participated in sports and drama at school including playing the piano, singing and was a “talented sketch artist.” He played youth soccer, high school basketball and high school football on Metrolina’s first football team.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Kirsten, sister Danica, brother William, sister Karen and her son, James, and brother Jeremiah.
