CMC-Union sponsors free sports screening, EKG for student athletes
High school athletes from across Union County will have a chance to get their physical exam completed for free next Saturday. Carolina’s Medical Center-Union is partnering with Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and OrthoCarolina to host Union County’s second annual Heart of a Champion Day. The event is open to rising high school athletes of Union, Anson, and Chesterfield counties and will take place June 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at Union West Medical Plaza in Indian Trail, located on Highway 74 across from the Harris Teeter Distribution Center.
Heart of a Champion provides high school athletes with the physical examination required to participate in school sports while also seeking to raise awareness of cardiovascular health and wellness. The event provides a free general sports screening (height, weight, blood pressure) to registered students, as well as a musculoskeletal check-up and a visual examination.
In addition to these basic screenings, on-site physicians will also conduct an electrocardiogram on each student. The EKG is not typically part of a general sports screening and will be performed to check for heart conditions that could potentially be fatal to athletes during competition.
“At the end of the event, the decision is made as to whether the athlete is cleared to participate in sports,” said CMC-Union Communications Manager Kelly Gullo. The goal of Heart of a Champion is to catch these issues before the students are given the green-light to participate in activities that could cause sudden death.
Of the 75 student athletes who participated in last year’s Union County Heart of a Champion event, 18 individuals were required to undergo further testing before being allowed to play sports. This year, officials hope to see more students participate in the event and continue to raise awareness about the overall health of the athletes. “(Heart of a Champion) is a really good pairing of heart, orthopedic, and general health,” said Gullo. “We hope to see between 100 and 200 students participate.”
Students athletes wishing to take part in the free services offered through Heart of a Champion can sign up online by visiting www.cmc-union.org and clicking on the “Heart of a Champion” link. Registration will close Monday, June 6, unless the event reaches its maximum capacity of 200 students before the deadline.
