Council approves purchase, plus allocation for Rea Road
Each member of the Weddington council will get an Ipad to do town business on. That was one of the items approved during their Monday, June 13 meeting, as a budget was adopted for the fiscal year starting July 1.
The Weddington council approved a budget of $1,240,020 for the upcoming year. In addition to the Ipad purchase, the council also set aside $250,000 in funding for a future library, earmarked from the General Fund. Also earmarked in the General Fund was $200,000 to help in the proposed Rea Road expansion.
The tax rate will remain the same for Weddington, at three cents per $100 of assessed value.
“The staff have been trying to get us to do this for three years,” Weddington Mayor Nancy Anderson said. “We’ve been talking for a while about going paperless.”
The reason it took so long, Anderson said, is because she and other council members liked using pen and paper to take notes. Now while she doesn’t oppose the idea of using Ipads, Anderson said she was surprised by the council’s budget decisions.
“Never did I think we’d buy (Ipads) but not pay for the upgrades Providence Volunteer Fire Department requested,” Anderson said. “I’m very disappointed and embarassed. We’re even spending money on landscaping, but not public safety.”
