Monroe police charge teens with incident on Mason Street
Four men are in custody after a daytime robbery on Mason Street Wednesday, March 30. Monroe police were called out to Carolinas Medical Center-Union around 4 p.m. in response to a victim who came in with a gunshot wound. The man, 33-year-old Monroe resident Jansen Rivens, was shot in the arm and robbed during an incident at 2701 Mason Street. Rivens was later taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he remains in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon.
After further investigation, police arrested and charged four men with the crime. 17-year-old Wingate resident Javonte Tyrone Blount, faces charges for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a handgun by a minor and discharging a firearm within city limits. The other three, 19-year-old Polkton resident Donnell Montnez Hailey and 18-year-old Monroe residents Matthew Woodberry and Raffie Troy Gwen face conspiracy to commit armed robbery charges.
“The initial investigation shows that this is drug related and appears to be a drug deal gone bad,” Monroe Police Chief Debra Duncan said, adding that additional charges are pending. Blount is in jail under a $50,000 bond, while Gwen, Hailey and Woodberry all have a $25,000 bond. All four are scheduled to appear in court April 28.
