Fourth grade students at Waxhaw Elementary went back in time March 17, as they heard stories from local Civil War re-enactors. The students have been studying the Civil War time period in class and how it relates to the state of North Carolina. The class heard from re-enactors, dressed in authentic reproductions of Confederate uniforms. Included in the presentation was a satchel filled with supplies soldiers carried around with them to help them survive. Students heard how soldiers had to soak their food prior to eating it to chase the bugs out.
Students also heard many of the daily struggles of a soldier’s life and how dangerous it was. Later on, the group took part in a mock musket drill.
