Editor’s note: The Union County Republican Party will choose a new executive board March 5, with Louis Philippi and John Steward as the two candidates for President. UCW extended the opportunity for both to give a final stump speech. Steward was the only one to respond.
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.”
– Ronald Reagan
The United States and NC are on the verge of an economic crisis. The Democrats have left NC with a $3 billion debt and President Obama has increased the national debt to unimaginable levels. Last November’s elections were historic for NC, as the Republicans captured both the NC House and Senate for the first time in over 100 years. I am proud of the role Union County played in helping achieve this milestone. Under my leadership, Union County GOP for the first time sent financial donations to candidates in other counties to ensure the Republicans were successful in winning the House and the Senate. However, that is just the beginning of our work. In 2008, President Obama raised over $600 million and spent over $25 million in NC and for the first time since 1976 NC went for the democrat presidential candidate. For the first time in memory, the DNC had paid poll workers all across Union County. President Obama and the DNC are projected to raise $1 billion for the 2012 election, and they will spend even more money in 2012. The Democrats will have their National Convention in Charlotte in hopes of winning back the NC House and Senate and retaining Gov Perdue and re-electing President Obama. Union County will play a vital role in the next two elections.
We must start preparing now, at the county and even precinct level if the Republicans want to have a chance to build on our historic gains. On the county level, as Chairman I will focus on 3 key areas: Party Unity, Party Growth and Fund Raising. While Union County has a large Republican advantage, we have to turn out even more voters in 2012 if we want to turn back the Obama machine.
Party Unity: As a party we need to focus on our agreements and not our differences. We will need to have a united front to withstand the Democrats charge. As the Vice Chairman, I have worked hard to bring different factions of the party together and work for common goals. As President Reagan said, “My 80 percent friend is not my 20 percent enemy”.
Party Growth: We need to re-energize our base by returning to our conservative values. We also need to reach out to new voters that share our goals, like the TEA Party, evangelical Christians, pro-lifers and any other voter that wants to return to limited, fiscally conservative government at every level.
Fund Raising: It doesn’t matter how great our ideas are, if we do not have the ability to get our message out, we will not win elections.
I am the Union County Republican Party Vice Chairman and serve on the NCGOP State Executive and Central Committees. I have been the lead fundraiser for Union County GOP for past 2 years. I was the county coordinator for Sen Burr’s reelection campaign. I have the experience, the proven leadership and fund raising abilities needed to prepare the Union County Republican Party to meet these challenges. Republican Leaders across NC have recognized the importance of the Union County race and their confidence in me, that is why several leaders have endorsed my candidacy, including State Representative Justin Burr, former NCGOP Party Chairman Tom Fetzer, and NC’s senior senator, Richard Burr.
