District narrows options to three law firms
by Alan Hodge
Three lawfirms are competing to advise the Union County Board of Education on school boundary changes following the 2010 Census.
Four law firms were originally in contact with the school system in the matter. Marshall Hurley PLLC was eliminated due to lack of qualifications, leaving the firms of Ogletree Deakins, Schwartz-Shaw, and Tharrington-Smith.
However, in the interest of continued negotiations, Chairman Arp set any vote on the subject aside until at least the March 22nd work session.
“I had hoped to move forward tonight,” Arp said. “This will give us a chance to go back and spend more time with them. It is a litigious area and we must be methodical and surefooted as we go forward.”
Estimates presented in letters to UCPS by the law firms for services connected with the job ranged from $12,500 to upwards of $100,000.
“There is a great disparity in proposals,” Arp said.
Tuesday’s meeting also saw a number of individuals recognized by the school board for outstanding achievements- including UCPS own communications office.
Marvin Ridge Middle School eight-grader Prakash Mishra was cited for winning the Charlotte Observer Regional Spelling Bee. He is set to go to Washington, D.C., on May 31st, 2011 to compete in the national spelling bee.
For the fourth year in a row, Weddington Elementary School’s Leigh Berry was named regional teacher assistant of the year. Berry will now compete for the North Carolina state title.
Porter Ridge Middle School Principal Tim Conner was named NC Region 6 Middle School’s Association 2011 Administrator of the Year.
Cuthbertson High School Principal Rob Jackson was chosen as the 2011 Wachovia Southwest Region Principal of the Year. Jackson was UCPS 2010-2011 Principal of the Year as well.
UCPS Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis was named 2011 North Carolina Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Distinguished Educator of the Year.

The awards were for excellence in writing, photography, publications, the UCPS website, the Bus STOP Safety Marketing Campaign, employee newsletter “Inside News”.
