The Union West Rotary Club named Donald Helms its 2011 Distinguished Rotarian, a title awarded to the club member who is a well-rounded Rotarian and someone who “transforms lives outside of Rotary”.
A Rotarian with perfect attendance for the past 12 years, Helms served as president of Union West Rotary in the 2008-09 year, following both his son Sean and his wife, Myra, in that position. Helms also served in many capacities, helping with the Rotary Christmas Parade, setting up for morning meetings, serving as a former member of the Indian Trail Town Council and picking up debris along roadways on Saturdays. After retiring from a career in sales and financial planning, he has worked as a board member of the Council on Aging in Union County. He now works part-time with Heritage Funeral Services.
“I am deeply honored and proud to be selected as this year’s Distinguished Rotarian,” Helms said. “I plan on continuing to be a lifelong Rotarian, upholding its motto of Service Above Self.” Married 47 years, he and his wife have two sons and four grandchildren.
