On January 26, the 2011 Session of the North Carolina General Assembly convened for its long session. A lot has changed. In November Republicans overwhelmingly took control of both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly. The House Republicans now hold a 68 to 52 seat majority over the Democrats and the Senate Republicans hold a 31 to 19 seat majority. This is a major change from the 2009-2010 session when Democrats held a 68 to 52 advantage in the House and 30 to 20 advantage in the Senate.
My good friend, Representative Thom Tillis of Mecklenburg County was elected Speaker of the House.
Speaker Tillis has asked me to lead one of the most important committees in the House, the Appropriations Sub-Committee on Health and Human Services. As Chairman of the HHS Appropriations Committee I will be a key budget writer and oversee that portion of the state budget in the legislature. The Health and Human Services budget totals close to 17.9 billion dollars.
The Speaker also appointed me to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Election Law Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Health and Human Services Policy Sub-Committee on Mental Health. Other committees the Speaker appointed me to serve as a member of include Government, Health and Human Services Policy and Insurance. I am honored by the number of appointments I have received and I look forward to continuing on my pledge to make sure our community’s voice is heard in Raleigh.
