Social Services will take applications from anyone who wants to receive food provided by the federal government March 7, a Monday, from 9 a.m. until noon. The next food distribution will be held on March 23, a Wednesday, at the Monroe National Guard Armory. On a quarterly basis, the Department of Agriculture provides food to counties at no cost to the agencies responsible for distribution.
To be eligible, an individual must be either an active, approved Food Stamp program participant or meet the federal income poverty guidelines based upon household income and size. Food Stamp recipients are automatically eligible and do not need to apply. The foods scheduled for distribution include apple juice, apple sauce, chicken leg quarters, corn, cranberry sauce, mixed fruit, orange juice, peanut butter, peas, potatoes and cereal.
Anyone with questions about the food distribution program or who would like to volunteer during distribution should call Gloria Haney at 704-296-4312. The Social Services building is located at 1212 West Roosevelt Blvd. in Monroe.
