The Union County Department of Social Services is scheduling appointments for county residents seeking assistance with filing their income tax returns.
The agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax preparation to individuals with gross incomes of $49, 000 or less per year. Taxpayers work with volunteers who are certified by the Internal Revenue Service. DSS electronically files each tax return, and income refunds are usually back within 7 to 10 days.
According to officials, more volunteers are needed for the VITA program. “We need volunteers for the VITA program and we also have volunteer opportunities throughout DSS,” DSS volunteer services coordinator Gloria Haney said. “We always need volunteers to help with clerical tasks, transportation and other duties all over the organization.”
