I want to congratulate Union County Commissioners for continuing their record of excellence Tuesday night in Monroe by scheduling, considering and passing a resolution questioning the wisdom of state annexation statutes and to ask the legislature to end forced annexations as aggressive, unjust and morally wrong. Municipalities like Marvin and others across the state are abusing current statutes and need to be stopped from their arrogant land-grabs and tax-and-spend tactics.
The meeting room was filled to capacity with concerned citizens, many of whom signed up to speak on the annexation resolution issue. The unanimous opinion of every person who spoke to this issue was that forced annexation was wrong on many levels. The loud and determined consensus of all speakers was that the entire existing annexation statute, addressing voluntary as well at involuntary annexations, needed to be changed dramatically or thrown out. Cathy Heath of StopNCAnnexation.com came down on behalf of her statewide organization of similarly minded counties and citizens, reminding everyone that this is by no means a local issue.
We need Reps. Craig Horn and Tommy Tucker to get deeply involved in solving the annexation issue on a state level for the good of not only their constituents here in Union County but all N.C. taxpayers. The new legislature is poised to make meaningful changes this term. I encourage Reps. Horn and Tucker to work with their colleagues in the State capitol to change annexation laws to outlaw forced annexation entirely and please make sure any annexation statute written allows for the input of the citizens directly affected.
Our county commissioners made us proud Tuesday night.
