More than 170 students and parents turned out this past week for the Monroe Middle School Redhawk 5k race. The school holds the event, limited to parents and students, each year to raise awareness about childhood obesity and promote healthy, active children.
Field Miller was the overall male winner, with a time of 17 minutes, 59 seconds, and Daphne Koenigsberg placed first among female runners, in 26 minutes, 16 seconds.
This was Rahmaad Sturdivant’s first race, and he placed first among male students, finishing in 23 minutes, 44 seconds. “I participated in the race because I thought that I had gained weight and needed to exercise,” Sturdivant said.
Yesenia Garcia, a sixth-grader, was the overall female student winner, finishing in 30 minutes, 24 seconds.
Sponsors for the 5K race were: City of Monroe, Carolinas Medical-Union, Chestnut Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Alice Jules, McDonald’s, Hilltop Restaurant, Compare Foods, IASO Sport Center and Food Lion.
School officials also organiced a community fair, and a number of local businesses participated: Costco, Rite-Aide, United Family Services, Turning Point, Latino Outreach, Union County Health Department, Wingate University School of Pharmacy, Cooperativa Credit Union and Carolinas Medical-Union. Proceeds from the event will go towards new athletic equipment for the school.
