Providence Fire Department has a problem, but it’s not internal. Rather, it’s newspapers like the Weekly that criticize and take shots at a department going through a simple transition. Past articles have accused the department of suffering a shortfall, but I heard, at their Nov. 7 meeting, the board of directors said the Town of Weddington had given the full year’s worth of funding instead of doling it out on what I assume was a monthly basis. This is actually smarter and something the town should have done long ago. Since this amount is over $170, 000, that means the $66, 000 shortfall the Weekly previously accused the department of having doesn’t exist. So that article was wrong.
Also, this so-called merger with Wesley Chapel? Providence doesn’t want it and shouldn’t be forced into it. The county’s fire study supposedly called for it? No doubt that’s what the county wants people to believe so that Providence will just turn over control without a fuss.
Finally, yes, some of the current daytime paid staff are working with volunteers at night but get real. You think they’re paid twice or something? They get paid during the day. The extra shifts at night are volunteer, just like everyone else.
You guys might want to check your facts before accusing the department of a non-existent problem.
