A project three years in the making came to fruition Monday, Nov. 8, as the Weddington town council approved streetscape plans. The town will place three “gateways”, columns with the word Weddington running down the side, at three of the entrances into the area: the rear entrance to Highgate subdivision, Hwy. 84 and near the Lutheran church property.
Additionally, 26 banners will adorn lampstands throughout the downtown. Each of the lampheads are almost 4 feet tall, with the total pole towering 14 feet.
The town council voted to pay up to $210, 000 for the project, including $108, 000 for installation. The gateways by themselves cost $18, 000, and the banners an extra $73, 580. The council approved the spending 3 to 1, with Jerry McKee in dissenting. McKee had suggested the town ask the N.C. Department of Transportation to help pay for the project, which other members said was pointless, since the state doesn’t have enough money to pay for its own construction plans.
