Union County teens share scripture, faith during event
Over 100 students flooded the field at Porter Ridge High last year. It wasn’t for homecoming, a football game or any other athletic event. Instead, students simply walked up to the microphone and talked about their faith, sharing scripture and encouraging each other.
Fields of Faith is a nationwide event where Christian students of all denominations come together at a school in their county. The concept was created in 2004, by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, but extends beyond the sports world to welcome in any Union County student. Last year, over 125,000 students took part in events across the nation, with 3,248 becoming Christians as a result.
2009 marked the first time the event was held in Union County, put together by Porter Ridge High parent Kathy Hoosier.
“Adults have done what they could to take God out of school,” Hoosier said. “That’s our foundation, that’s our freedom.”
Hoosier got in touch with parents and teachers at Central Academy, Weddington and Piedmont High, to organize the first meeting. That inaugural event saw 150 students attend, far short of the 300 expected, due to some bad weather.
“We had a storm right before last year’s event, it really put a damper on attendance,” Hoosier said. “We had youth groups planning to come in. This year we’re hoping the rain holds off.”
Across the nation, a projected 400 different cities and counties will hold Field of Faith events this year. Hoosier, who works with the local FCA at both Porter Ridge High and Porter Ridge Middle, said it’s inspiring to see the kids take charge of the events.
“Kids see and pay attention to leaders,” Hoosier said. “These kids stand by their actions. An adult can talk all day about the struggles and what it means to be a christian, but just like anyone else, the kid is going to listen when someone their own age says it.”
The event was scheduled to be held this year at Weddington High, but after members of the staff fell victim to injuries and sickness, it was moved back to Porter Ridge. Weddington High will host the event in 2011.
This year’s Fields of Faith will take place Oct. 13 at 7 p.m on Porter Ridge’s football field. For more information, call Hooiser at 704-231-5929.
