East Union teacher wins top honor

Maxie Johnson Jr., a seventh-grade math teacher at East Union Middle School, was recently named Union County Public School’s Teacher of the year.

“I just happen to be in his classroom this week, and I want to tell you, this man can really teach,” said UCPS Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis last week. “I walked out of his classroom and asked his principal, ‘Does he always teach like this? Is he always this engaged with his kids, this energetic? He must be worn out at the end of the day.’ Mr. Johnson is a wonderful representation of the teaching profession.”

For winning the county’s top teaching prize, Johnson received $500 and a Teacher of the Year ring. The Union County Education Foundation also awarded Johnson a laptop computer.
