WAXHAW – Waxhaw’s biggest party of the year starts Saturday, Oct. 13, and goes through Sunday, Oct. 14, in historic downtown with the annual Autumn Treasures Festival.
The festival features professional and amateur barbecue competitions, live musical acts, lots of food, numerous arts and crafts vendors and family-fun kid’s zone.
In past years, crowds of around 10,000 people have flocked to the event.
The main event will be held in downtown Waxhaw on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 14 from noon to 5 p.m.
There will even be a little fun on Friday night as the professional BBQ competitors will begin preparing their BBQ. Shelley Ruffin and Soul Revival will perform at a concert 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12 by Dreamchaser’s Brewery.
There will also be live music on Saturday and Sunday with a wide range of musical acts scheduled to play.
The Grill’n and Chill’n BBQ cookoff is on Oct. 13 and the professional competitors from the Kansas City Barbeque Society will start their cooking on Friday night in preparation for Saturday’s professional competition.
Twenty-three professional barbecue teams from the North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia signed up to cook. The public can get tastes of the barbecue for a small fee Oct. 13 from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and the proceeds help local charities. Cash prizes are award to the top teams in the competition.
KCBS sanctions BBQ and Grilling competitions across the U.S. and promotes barbecue as America’s cuisine. In addition, KCBS has an extensive Certified Barbeque Judging program. It is the largest society of barbecue enthusiasts in the world.
The Waxhaw Grill’n & Chill’n BBQ Cook-off is a traditional sanctioned KCBS contest. A traditional sanctioned KCBS contest is staffed by KCBS-approved contest organizers and judges. Pro Teams are required to cook four meats — chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and brisket.
The cooking source at a traditional sanctioned contest is wood, wood pellets or charcoal. Pro teams participating are eligible to advance to the American Royal BBQ Championship and the Jack Daniels World Championship. All teams who participate accumulate points toward the KCBS Team of the Year awards and cash prizes.
